I'm resisting. Really, I am. This was a style of glove I've been looking at for quite some time from these folks, and they're discontinuing it, so they're selling it at $30 off. Trouble is they charge $20 shipping for any order. Mind you, they have other things I'd like to get as well (upgrades for the leather jacket, like bike armor and a vest liner), but I've been trying to be good about the whole credit card thing. The one I thought I'd have paid off isn't, but that's because I haven't gotten in touch with my broker. Still might be paid off in time, but I can live if it isn't, I'll just throw the money at the other card.

To spend or not to spend, that is the question.

(and for the curious, I do actually have two purposes in mind for them. I need a good set of stiff-cuffed gloves for fencing, and I'm looking to finally get my motorcycle license. Permit as soon as I can, looking at a class in September or so)

You fence? Do you know how to teach fencing? Is there a marshall out here? I want to learn so badly!
I even have some fencing swords...meh!

Unfortunately, my fencing skills are minimal at best. I'm looking to pick it up to get more work with point control, which will translate well to spear and polearm work. My biggest problem right now is calibration, which means I'm still trying to run people through like I'm using my glaive. By Aethelmearc standards, this means I'm hitting too hard (though from what I understand, I'm pretty much spot on for Atlantia).

As for who fences in the Albany/Troy area, I'm afraid I can't help you there. You might want to try talking to Rob/Balthazar in Concordia, as he took up fencing when he had his last round of back surgery iirc.

There is such a thing as hitting too hard? The whole point in swordplay is to kill one's opponent. God forbid we kill them too hard... :-)

They like to play at the "If I can keep myself from hitting you too hard, you should take comfort in the knowledge that I could have killed you instead". Me, I don't see the point in walking away from any fight practice without at least one contestant for the sexy bruise of the week competition.

Ah, spoken like a true heavy fighter... :-D

Oh, and by the way... resistance is futile.

well there's that and the fact that when fencing swords break it's usually pretty darn ugly (ragged metal ends are not good friends to your skin)...and I do get bruises from fencing from time to time. The point is not to. Fencing is really a good deal about finesse.

i'm discovering that atlantian fencers really don't hit much harder (especially when things speed up and get messy, which's when aethelmarc folks tend to lose calibration-control a bit)..the main difference is that atlantians won't take things at the lighter edge of the calibration scale
getting used to the different cuts is harder, but i'm starting to get it
