Tuesday I took some time to dash off to the mall, and while I was there, I picked up a copy of "The Ring". Tonight I finally got the chance to sit down and watch it. I even turned off the heat so that the blowers wouldn't kick in during the movie (the intake is about 3 feet from the TV)

The verdict?

Soundbites from W's speech the other night were scarier.

Okay, it had its moments of "Oh God..." Yes, the scene on the ferry was impressive. The scene with interesting uses for horse tack made me go ick (and they show you more on the DVD). But for everyone who said "Oh god, the ending! The ending!"... go watch Videodrome. Cronenberg did it a thousand times better and ten years earlier.

I do want to see the original... Maybe I'm being a snob, maybe I'm just too fucking jaded, but I believe that the Japanese are definitely a couple of steps ahead of America in the horror market. So many American horror films were released in Japan on laserdisc... Italian films... Japan's had the pick of the screamers for years, and all we've been getting is the same old indestructable killer slashing through the teenagers of the month. Anyway, I still have hope... I now know too much about the movie for it to have full effect, but I imagine that it (and perhaps even the Korean version) will have their moments that will still put this higher budget piece to shame.

On the plus side, I finally know what the poorly worded cinema trivia question refers to: "What director uses water to symbolize death?" Christ, who the fuck writes these things? Is it really his signature, or is it just that this moron who wrote the question decided that this would be the be-all end all defining moment of Verbinski's career?

Mardi Gras party tomorrow night. Faboo!
