I have to say that Mistress Malchia and her whatever the fuck he is have singlehandedly made me immensely proud to be anything *other* than a Concordian.
Since you're one of the folks who doesn't know the people involved, I'll do the detailed version for you :)
Short form: a self-important wanker decided to get even more self-important, thus furthering the already shitty opinion I already had of him and his companion (I want to say that *she* has had nothing to do with this particular situation herself, but in my experience, they're both just pretty rotten people. This does nothing to change that opinion.)
Geography: Concordia is the Albany area SCA group (as opposed to Anglespur, which is just Rensselaer county, and thus the Troy area group).
They held a demo last week that included fighting. A reporter took a picture of a combat that included one of our guys, Wulfstan the Unshod. Said picture made it onto the front page of the Schenectady Gazette. The link was passed on to the Concordia Yahoo group, saying "Look! Press coverage!"
Andre, the aforementioned whatever the fuck he is, decided to take umbrage with the fact that Mr. the Unshod was, in fact, unshod. Because it's against the rules, it is! And he sent off the fiery missive complaining about "the furtherance of local opinion on "geeks in cloaks"! "
So folks said things to the extent of "It's period" and "He won 75% of the fights that day..." and "Only one kid asked, but frankly the crowd loved it." In other words, the list uttered a collective "So what?"
Which led Andre to scream all the louder about how reprehensible this disregard of the law* is (bluster bluster) and how he personally removed Wolf from the field years ago (bluster bluster) and "as for his ability to kill you repeatedly, i would recommend that you practice a bit more rather than taking off your shoes." and how this is *gasp* setting a bad example.
We'll ignore the facts that... 1) Wulfstan has been fighting without shoes for close to 20 years. 2) Wulfstan will politely don shoes if a marshal tells him to do so. 3) Andre had to actually ask who it was in the picture that was fighting without shoes, something that tells me he hasn't bothered to show up to any local events for at least the past two years.
And frankly, a bunch of other wankery as well. The best part was when he ended his own participation, saying "thank you for offering a reasonable response, rather than kneejerk selfrighteous bluster."
To which I say the only bluster was, in fact, his own.
Looking back, I see that I have already given this wanker far more time and consideration than he deserves :)
* Really! His own words! Well, kind of. His exact quote was "it's unbelievable that there is no one else on this list who finds this reprehensible. at the very least the local knight marshalkl should be up in arms."
If this is in regards to the crap spewed on the concordsnows list, they're hardly Concordian. They live in the right zip code, but Andre refuses to associate with anything Concordian and spews vitrol like that on a regular basis. I don't even know the last time I saw them at an event. Purpura recalls seeing her at an event four years ago, perhaps.
There are a handful of people in Concordia that really piss me off too, and they've been prominent in the past few years and caused more than a few people to stop working at & running events.
Oh, I'm not lumping y'all together. More that I got pointed at this mess right after reading the latest novella from our own "source of irritation" and I thought to myself...
No, nothing dreadful. It was just Pearce's post about the demo! And they are going to let him use his whip! So he was going to demo his whip! Which just made me think of him as a pudu (http://littledee.net/2006pics/20060209.gif")!
Though the mental image of Pearce hopping up and down like a ferret on speed saying "Whip! Whip! Whip! Whip! Whip! Whip! Whip!" does entertain me somewhat.
I don't lump all Concordians into one negative category, but the people who speak loud and don't help and over-complicate and over-politic are why I'm not a Concordian.
Who's Mistress Malchia? Just because there are a couple of dopes in a group doesn't mean the entire group is flawed. If good people step up, usually the idiots go away, and I know that Toki needs good people. Make Concordia better yourselves, yo. ;)
As I mentioned above, Mistress Malchia actually had nothing to do with this particular flurry of feces. This was all the doing of her male counterpart. My own experiences with Malchia have rather permanently esconced her on my personal shit list.
This post was meant more as a terribly cruel exercise in pointing and laughing at the people who are stuck with them. In context, they manage to make what is going on in Myrkfaelinn that much more bearable.
hippie kids that grew up. She's OK, for the most part, but she's gotten... old, in the past 20 years, rather than just growing up. Became conservative in her outlook.
Her husband, on the other hand, is a knight from Meridies, who finds himself a transplant in the Central Region of the East Kingdom. In a region where people do not suck up to knights the same way that they did in Meridies. They suck up differently. Where fighters argue with marshalls over Robert of Auk meant when he states in the armor standards, "Street hockey gloves are NOT equivalent. Street hockey gloves may be used in tandem with a demi-gauntlet and basket hilt. Street hockey gloves may also be used behind a shield in tandem with a shield basket." And regional marshalls when asked about this reply "I have no idea."
He was right. And Wulfie knows better, he just doesn't care. Andre is stuck in an untenable position. He's a knight, and therefore a marshall. He was doing his job. He just did it as a tempertantrum, rather than productive discussion.
Doesn't make him any less of a jerk, however. Or make Wulfstan any less wrong. You don't get to pick and choose which rules in the SCA you're going to follow.
I have spoken to Wulfie, and he explained the rest of the circumstances behind him not having shoes on when he fought. All he had with him were sandals, which would have been worse for him than fighting barefoot.
However, if he hadn't fought barefoot, there would have been no demo.
The question is, are the rules cast in stone, or are they simply guidelines? I regard them as what I have to follow to do my job correctly as a marshall. Some folks regard them as a set of guidelines to follow.
